Reminder: March 2 Application Deadline for ASCA Literary Arts Fellowships

The Alabama State Council on the Arts makes cash awards to individual writers in the literary arts based on merit of work, career achievement, career potential and service to the state. The award recognizes artistic excellence as well as professional commitment and maturity. It is intended to contribute to the further development of the literary artist and the advancement of his or her professional career. Applicants are encouraged to be as specific as possible about the proposed use of fellowship funds.

Quality of work and professionalism as presented in the samples of work are particularly important, since there is a great deal of competition for fellowships. Samples of work may include fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and screenwriting. Please, include a detailed resume along with the following: a list of published works with reviews (if available) and a minimum of ten pages of poetry or prose, but no more than 20 pages. If published, please, indicate where published and date of publication. Please, submit only writing samples completed within the last five years.

An applicant must be a legal resident of Alabama who has lived in the state for the two years prior to the application. An individual may submit only one fellowship application during the year. Fellowship recipients cannot apply again for six years after receipt of the award, but previous applicants who have not received a fellowship are encouraged to apply again. Artists who have received two fellowships are no longer eligible.

Applications must be submitted electronically via eGRANT by 4:45 p.m. March 2, 2015. Access to eGRANT is available at the Alabama State Council on the Arts website at http://www.arts.alabama.gov.

Greetings, friends of ACETA!

The ACETA Executive Committee and the University of South Alabama in Fairhope would like to invite you to the 67th annual conference of the Association of College English Teachers of Alabama (ACETA).

Our theme this year is “A Place in the Sun,” and this year’s presenters will discuss sun, fun, success, struggle, and writing in a series of panels over the course of the weekend.

Friday night’s keynote address features Frye Galliard, writer in residence at the University of South Alabama, and Kathryn Scheldt, songwriter and guitarist. Frye will read passages from his book The Quilt and the Poetry of Alabama Music, and Kathryn Scheldt will play acoustic guitar.  The keynote will be part of the ACETA dinner held at Wintzell’s Oyster House in Fairhope. The dinner will be a seafood buffet with vegetarian option and includes dessert and drinks.

Saturday’s lunch is a box lunch provided by Mary Ann’s Deli: you will have a choice between The Judy B (smoked turkey, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on whole), Italian Hero (ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, and Italian dressing on French bread), and the Vegetarian (cheddar, provolone, lettuce, artichoke hearts, tomato, onions, and fresh seasonal veggies and pesto vinaigrette French bread).  Lunch will include sandwich, chips, pickle, cookie and drink (either soft drink or tea). Sue Walker will be reading for her latest project.

The registration form is also available here on this site. As you fill out the form, please indicate whether you will join us for dinner Friday and/or lunch Saturday.  If you would like the vegetarian option on Friday, please indicate that choice on the form as well as your choice of sandwich on Saturday.
Please fill out and submit your registration form to us, and we’ll see you in Fairhope!

The Hampton Inn in downtown Fairhope (23 N. Section St.) has rooms set aside for conference attendees, and it is just a block away from the USA campus, where the conference will be held.  The cost per night is $119.00. Reservations can be made by calling the hotel at 251-928-0956 and asking for the ACETA 2015 special group rate which is good through February 13th. Reservations can also be made online at www.fairhope.hamptoninn.com using the group code (CET).
